Good Night, Sleep Tight, Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite
by

Many of us remember this little phrase, as something our parents would tell us before we went to sleep when we were children. When I was a child, I certainly remember this and thought it was sort of funny. I didn't really understand it, though. Well...all that has changed recently, as reported by many news agencies and publications. I live in New York City and bed bugs have been a real problem here. Many stores and movie theaters have been closed down to spray for bed bugs in the northeast. Even our NYC mayor, Mike Bloomberg, brought some home with him from Lincoln Center, of all places!
After World War II, the problem of bed bugs had just about disappeared from the US due to the widespread use of DDT, a very toxic pesticide. DDT was outlawed due to its carcinogenic properties about 30 years ago. So now the bed bugs are back and they have come back with a vengeance...sort of "super bugs". Some people think they are escalating because of global travel; the increase of the homeless population; the popularity of "Flea" markets and second hand merchandise. Recently there is another suggestion by an entomologist in the northeast. He says that since so much of our clothing, sheets, towels, etc. come from outside the United States...even expensive things...they are coming in on these products. These products come from China and Indonesia, where they don't consider bed bugs a problem, so they don't control them. So, he recommends that when you remove these items from their packages (and it doesn't matter if they come from Walmart or Neiman Marcus) — put them in the dryer for 20 minutes. This kills the bed bugs and their eggs. By all means, don't hang clothing up in the closet first.
Some of the sprays companies are using for bed bug eradication are very toxic. A non-toxic blend of essential oils can be made from 3 essential oils available from Young Living Essential Oils. This is an excellent company and makes only the highest quality essential oils. First, Palo Santo oil, which comes from Ecuador. Next, Eucalyptus, which has been used historically for bed bugs. Last, Cedarwood oil, which was used by the Native American Indians to ward of ticks and fleas.
Bed Bug Spray
10 drops of Palo Santo (Item #3607)
6 drops of Eucalyptus Blue (Item #3597)
5 drops of Cedarwood (Item #3509)
Combine with 4 oz. of distilled or filtered water in a dark spray bottle. Spray on clothing, linens, and bedding if you suspect bed bugs or have been to a theater or store that may be contaminated. This spray will not be appropriate for really delicate clothing, as it is a liquid and could stain. It is fine for coats and most clothing, but probably not your ball gown.
***And don't put your handbag/briefcase on the floor in a movie theater!
